Speed limiter installation- compliances in the UAE

Speed Limiters on Minibuses and other vehicles along with driver training are the critical issues to improving safety. The Ministry of Interior has mandated that all Minibuses that carry up to twenty-two passengers should install a Speed limiter. The maximum speed that buses are allowed in the UAE is 100 kmph, and school buses are allowed a speed of up to 80 Kmph.

How does the speed limiter technology reduce road accidents?

Research shows that the use of technology can reduce the human error rate by about 40%. This is important in limiting the loss of life and property. The other factors that come into play are lane discipline, driver fatigue, journey management, and driver training. This can be made possible with the use of speed limiters as they effectively reduce the amount of fuel that feeds the Minibus engine. Once the vehicle reaches a speed of 100 Kmph, the sensor is deployed to reduce fuel flow. The action lowers the engine speed, and even pressing on the accelerator will not help in increasing fuel flow.

The Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme aims to improve road safety.

Speed is a major cause of over 68% of serious road accidents in the UAE. The comprehensive Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme aims to control the installation of speed limiters. The system is designed to help vehicle owners and companies that run fleets of Minibuses and other transport vehicles to reduce accidents, injury, and death rates.

The scheme applies to all the components of the vehicle at the time of installation of the speed limiter. This includes auto parts like batteries and other engine parts that affect speed and engine RPM. This is important to ascertain that there is no fraud and counterfeiting while installing the speed limiters. The idea is to ensure maximum safety for all vehicles like cars, Minibuses, and other heavy vehicles to be saved from accidents due to excessive speeding.

Fitment centres and Safemax

Safemax has selected about 110 fitment centres across the UAE to ensure that the fitting of the speed limiters is done as per the compliance required. Dubai alone has over 45 such fitment centres.

The fitment centres oversee the installing of the speed limiter device and then run a series of checks before they issue a certificate that the kit was correctly installed. The limits are set with the help of a tamper-proof device. Safemax also trains technicians and runs workshops that help in installing and testing the speed limiter devices.

The idea behind fitting tamper-proof speed limiters as a mandatory fitment in all public vehicles is multi-purpose. The devices not only limits the speed of the Minibus but also helps in helping the driver remain in full control of the vehicle. The fuel consumption is reduced, and pollution is also controlled. The Minibus stays in the optimum speed zone, and that, in turn, helps to keep everyone on the roads a tad it safer.

Impact of having a mandatory speed limiter in School buses

The order to make it compulsory for all Minibuses, especially school buses, has impacted the lives of over 2.5 lakh school students in Dubai alone. Over 3000 buses in UAE are school buses, and it is of utmost importance that speed limiters should be installed with due diligence to reduce road accidents.
